The New England coast is dotted with many beach communities that thrive in the summer and hibernate in winter. While this isn’t unique to any coastal area there’s a peculiar feeling when you live in one such as I do. The roads are cold and empty, the ice cream stands and waterparks boarded up and locked. These are the remnants of summer life during winter in Vacationland. There’s an intense, furious cold that creeps into the sight of these homes, boarded up and wrapped tight like mausoleums. Their occupants gone they become full of ghosts that without the light and heat of summer are free to roam as they do. During the COVID-19 pandemic era this became even more apparent as homes went unoccupied for almost the full year. Not as much as should have given the fury of the pandemic yet the absence was apparent. Many left at the end of the previous summer never to return. The cold gray skies, the blue glass water and the sight of these houses is the inspiration for SUMMER HOMES FOR THE DEAD. I hope you enjoy it.
